Literacy...The ability to read and write.
Literacy group cutting fabric to make book bags for babies.
Altrusa has always supported and encouraged our community projects to have a literacy component. Today nine members of the Literacy committee met at Barb's house to cut fabric. This fabric is stitched into book bags with embroidered labels from the two libraries we partner with: The Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth, NH and the Freedom Public Library in Freedom, NH. In partnership with the library (and their friend's group) these bags are filled with books for infants and toddlers, along with information about the children's program at each of the libraries. The books are given to all parents of newborns in their respective towns. It is a known fact that if reading (and listening) start in infancy, a child has a much better chance to succeed in school and beyond. These bags will be stitched up by club members (and friends) and then presented to the libraries. One of the other benefits of working on hands on projects is that we all get to know each other better. Socializing with other members is an important part of who we are as Altrusans. Our next meeting will be held on the first Tuesday in February (3rd) at 5:30 at the Madison Town Library. Guests are always welcome. We hope there is no snow storm.. that's the one thing that slows us down!! #Altrusa #Altrusaliteracy #Altrusadistrictone #Altrusaservice #Altrusamembership
